Serelose Oral Solution 3.35 gm/5 ml is a synthetic disaccharide laxative containing Lactulose, used to treat constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose is a non-digestible sugar that exerts its effects in the colon, promoting bowel movements and reducing blood ammonia levels in patients with liver disease. Serelose is particularly effective for chronic constipation, impaction, and as part of therapy to prevent hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis or portal-systemic shunts.

Serelose Oral Solution is indicated for:
Chronic constipation in adults and children
Acute constipation when rapid relief is needed
Hepatic encephalopathy to reduce ammonia absorption in patients with liver disease
Bowel preparation before certain diagnostic procedures
By increasing bowel water content and improving peristalsis, Serelose provides gentle, predictable relief without causing harsh cramping.
Lactulose is a synthetic, non-absorbable disaccharide composed of galactose and fructose. Its mechanisms include:
Osmotic effect: Lactulose is metabolized by colonic bacteria to organic acids, increasing osmotic pressure and drawing water into the colon
Acidification of colonic contents: Reduces intestinal pH, converting ammonia (NH₃) to ammonium (NH₄⁺), which is less absorbable, helping lower systemic ammonia levels
Promotion of bowel motility: Softens stools and stimulates peristalsis for regular bowel movements
This dual effect makes Serelose suitable for both constipation relief and management of hepatic encephalopathy.
For constipation:
Adults: 15–45 ml per day, divided into 1–3 doses
Children: 5–15 ml per day, depending on age
Adjust dose to achieve 1–2 soft stools daily
For hepatic encephalopathy:
Initial dose: 30–45 ml orally, 3–4 times daily
Dose may be titrated to achieve 2–3 soft bowel movements per day
Can be taken with or without food
May be diluted in water, milk, or juice for easier administration
Maintain adequate hydration during treatment
Minimal systemic absorption reduces the likelihood of significant drug interactions
Concurrent use with other osmotic or stimulant laxatives may enhance the laxative effect
Electrolyte imbalance may occur in combination with diuretics during long-term therapy
Serelose Oral Solution should not be used in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to Lactulose
Galactosemia (inborn intolerance to galactose)
Intestinal obstruction or undiagnosed abdominal pain
Serelose is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include:
Flatulence and bloating
Abdominal discomfort or cramping
Diarrhea if the dose is too high
Rare: Electrolyte imbalance with prolonged use in the elderly or debilitated patients
Monitor patients with diabetes, as Lactulose contains sugars that may slightly affect blood glucose
Use cautiously in patients with severe dehydration or electrolyte disorders
Adjust dose in elderly or frail patients to avoid excessive laxation
Lactulose is considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to minimal systemic absorption
Use only as directed to avoid excessive diarrhea
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light
Keep out of reach of children
Do not use after the expiry date.
