Nitaxide 100 mg/5 ml Oral Suspension is an effective antiprotozoal and anti-diarrhoeal medicine used for the treatment of infectious diarrhea caused by specific protozoal organisms. It is specially formulated for oral use and is suitable for pediatric as well as adult patients when taken according to recommended dosage guidelines. Nitaxide works by targeting the energy metabolism of protozoa, helping to eliminate the causative organisms and relieve diarrheal symptoms.

Indications

Nitaxide 100 mg/5 ml is indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by the following protozoal infections:

• Cryptosporidium parvum

• Giardia lamblia

• Entamoeba histolytica

Pharmacology / Mode of Action

Nitaxide 100 mg/5 ml contains a synthetic antiprotozoal agent that interferes with the Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer reaction. This enzymatic pathway is essential for anaerobic energy metabolism in protozoa. By inhibiting this process, Nitaxide disrupts the energy production of the parasites, leading to their growth inhibition and eventual elimination.
Both Nitaxide and its active metabolite, tizoxanide, demonstrate in vitro activity against sporozoites and oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum and trophozoites of Giardia lamblia.

Dosage & Administration

Nitaxide 100 mg/5 ml should be administered with food for optimal absorption.

• Age 1–3 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) every 12 hours for 3 days

• Age 4–11 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) every 12 hours for 3 days

• Age 12 years and above: 25 ml (5 teaspoonfuls) suspension or 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 days

Dosage should be followed as prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Drug Interactions

Nitaxide is highly bound to plasma proteins. Caution is advised when it is administered concomitantly with other drugs that are also highly plasma protein-bound and have a narrow therapeutic index.

Contraindications

Nitaxide 100 mg/5 ml is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Nitaxide or any component of the formulation.

Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects include:

• Abdominal pain

• Vomiting

• Headache

These effects are usually mild and transient. Rarely reported side effects may include nausea, anorexia, flatulence, increased appetite, pruritus, dizziness, rhinitis, sweating, discoloration of urine, elevated creatinine, and increased SGPT levels.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Nitaxide 100 mg/5 ml is classified as US FDA Pregnancy Category B. Although animal studies have not shown fetal risk, adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking. The medicine should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Nitaxide is excreted in human breast milk; therefore, caution is advised when administering to lactating mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in patients with hepatic, biliary, or renal disease. Medical supervision is recommended in such cases.
