Infovir Tablet 10 mg contains Adefovir Dipivoxil, a potent antiviral agent used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults. This medication is especially beneficial for patients with evidence of active viral replication and elevated liver enzymes. Adefovir Dipivoxil belongs to the class of nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors, which act to suppress viral replication and reduce liver inflammation, thereby helping to prevent the progression of liver disease.

Antiviral – Nucleotide Analog Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor
Adefovir Dipivoxil is a prodrug that, upon oral administration, is rapidly converted in the body to Adefovir, the active form. Adefovir selectively inhibits hepatitis B virus DNA polymerase, an enzyme essential for viral replication. By acting as a chain terminator during viral DNA synthesis, it prevents HBV from multiplying, thereby reducing viral load in the liver and bloodstream.
Adefovir demonstrates activity against both wild-type and lamivudine-resistant HBV strains. The medication exhibits low protein binding, is primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys, and has a long intracellular half-life, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Infovir Tablet 10 mg is indicated for:
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults with evidence of active viral replication
Patients with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and liver inflammation due to HBV
Treatment of patients with compensated or decompensated liver disease caused by chronic HBV infection
Adults: 10 mg orally once daily, with or without food
The treatment duration depends on the patient’s virologic response and physician assessment
Dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment
Administration Note:
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and taken consistently at the same time each day to maintain stable drug levels.
Caution is advised with nephrotoxic agents, as combined use may increase the risk of kidney toxicity
Co-administration with other antivirals should be carefully monitored to avoid additive adverse effects
Regular monitoring of renal function is recommended during concurrent therapy
Known hypersensitivity to Adefovir Dipivoxil or any of the tablet excipients
Severe renal impairment without dose adjustment
Common side effects may include:
Headache, dizziness, fatigue
Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
Mild elevations in liver enzymes
Rarely, renal toxicity, lactic acidosis, and hepatomegaly with steatosis may occur
Monitor renal function regularly during therapy, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney disease
Long-term use may lead to the development of drug-resistant HBV strains; periodic virologic monitoring is recommended
Use with caution in patients with decompensated liver disease
Infovir Tablet 10 mg is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the risk. It is not recommended for use during breastfeeding due to potential excretion in human milk.
