Indications

Lamivir 100 mg Tablet is indicated for:

• Chronic Hepatitis B Infection: In adults and pediatric patients with evidence of active HBV replication and either elevated liver enzymes or histologically proven liver damage.

• Suppression of HBV DNA: Reduces viral replication, lowering the risk of progressive liver disease.

• Post-Liver Transplant Patients: In some cases, Lamivir may be used to prevent HBV reinfection in liver transplant recipients.

Pharmacology

Lamivudine is a synthetic cytidine analog that inhibits HBV DNA polymerase by incorporating into viral DNA, resulting in chain termination during viral replication. This action effectively reduces HBV replication in hepatocytes. Lamivudine is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, achieving peak plasma concentration within 0.5 to 2 hours. It is minimally metabolized and primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, making dose adjustment necessary in patients with impaired renal function.

Lamivir is generally well-tolerated and has a high selectivity for viral polymerase over human DNA polymerase, which reduces the risk of host toxicity. Long-term therapy can suppress viral load to undetectable levels, improving liver function and histology.

Dosage and Administration

Adults:

• Recommended dose: 100 mg orally once daily.

• Can be administered with or without food.

Pediatric Patients (2–17 years):

• Dosage is based on body weight:

  • 10–19 kg: 50 mg once daily

  • ≥20 kg: 100 mg once daily

Renal Impairment:

• Dose adjustment is recommended for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment.

Administration Tips:

• Swallow the tablet whole with water.

• Consistent daily intake at the same time each day improves efficacy.
