Indications

Propofol MCT Emulsion is indicated for:

• Induction of general anesthesia

• Maintenance of general anesthesia

• Sedation for mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICU)

• Procedural sedation (e.g., endoscopy, minor surgical procedures, diagnostic interventions)

It is suitable for adults and children above a certain age, depending on clinical guidelines and physician discretion.

Mechanism of Action

Propofol is a rapid-acting sedative-hypnotic agent. It works primarily by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor in the central nervous system. This increases inhibitory neurotransmission, resulting in sedation, hypnosis, and anesthesia.

It has a rapid onset of action (usually within 30–60 seconds) and a short duration due to rapid redistribution and metabolism, allowing quick recovery after discontinuation.

Dosage and Administration

• Administered intravenously by trained healthcare professionals only.

• Dosage depends on patient age, weight, medical condition, and procedure type.

• Induction dose in adults: typically 1.5–2.5 mg/kg IV.

• Maintenance dose: continuous infusion or repeated boluses as required.

• ICU sedation dosing is individualized and carefully titrated.
