Propofol MCT Emulsion for Infusion 200 mg/20 ml contains Propofol 10 mg/ml, a short-acting intravenous general anesthetic agent. It is formulated in a lipid emulsion containing medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which improves stability and tolerability. Propofol is widely used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, as well as for sedation in intensive care and procedural settings.

Propofol MCT Emulsion is indicated for:
Induction of general anesthesia
Maintenance of general anesthesia
Sedation for mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICU)
Procedural sedation (e.g., endoscopy, minor surgical procedures, diagnostic interventions)
It is suitable for adults and children above a certain age, depending on clinical guidelines and physician discretion.
Propofol is a rapid-acting sedative-hypnotic agent. It works primarily by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor in the central nervous system. This increases inhibitory neurotransmission, resulting in sedation, hypnosis, and anesthesia.
It has a rapid onset of action (usually within 30–60 seconds) and a short duration due to rapid redistribution and metabolism, allowing quick recovery after discontinuation.
Administered intravenously by trained healthcare professionals only.
Dosage depends on patient age, weight, medical condition, and procedure type.
Induction dose in adults: typically 1.5–2.5 mg/kg IV.
Maintenance dose: continuous infusion or repeated boluses as required.
ICU sedation dosing is individualized and carefully titrated.
Continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular function is mandatory during administration.
Rapid onset and quick recovery
Smooth induction of anesthesia
Reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting compared to some other anesthetics
Easy titration for sedation levels
Short duration allows better control during procedures
Common side effects:
Pain at injection site
Hypotension (low blood pressure)
Respiratory depression
Bradycardia
Less common but serious risks:
Severe hypotension
Apnea
Propofol infusion syndrome (rare but serious condition with prolonged high-dose use)
Allergic reactions
Immediate medical supervision is required during use.
