Vercef DS Suspension 80 mg/5 ml is a double-strength oral antibiotic formulation containing Cefpodoxime Proxetil, a third-generation cephalosporin widely used for the treatment of a broad range of bacterial infections. This suspension is specially designed to provide higher potency per dose, making it particularly suitable for pediatric patients requiring larger doses and for situations where accurate dosing and strong antibacterial coverage are essential.

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is a prodrug that is converted in vivo to its active form, Cefpodoxime, after oral administration. It exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to rapid bacterial cell death. Vercef DS demonstrates strong activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms and shows good stability against many beta-lactamase–producing bacteria, enhancing its clinical reliability.

Therapeutic Class

  • Third Generation Cephalosporin Antibiotic

Indications

Vercef DS Suspension is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:

  • Acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase–producing strains)

  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes

  • Acute maxillary sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase–producing strains), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Moraxella catarrhalis

  • Community-acquired pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase–producing strains)

  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis

  • Skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, or Staphylococcus saprophyticus

  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea and rectal gonococcal infections in women caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, including penicillinase-producing strains

Pharmacology

Cefpodoxime is an orally active third-generation cephalosporin with a broad antibacterial spectrum and good resistance to beta-lactamase enzymes. Following oral administration, Cefpodoxime Proxetil is rapidly absorbed and converted to Cefpodoxime. Approximately 29–33% of the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine within 12 hours, contributing to its effectiveness in urinary tract infections.
