Pharmacology:
Valena 0.01% 16 gm contains naturally occurring estrogens, which are essential for the development and maintenance of the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics. Estrogens modulate pituitary secretion of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) through negative feedback, helping to restore hormonal balance in menopausal or oophorectomized women.
Dosage & Administration:
Oral:
Menopausal vasomotor symptoms: 1–2 mg/day (cyclical or continuous)
Prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis: 0.5 mg/day (cyclical)
Hypogonadism: 1–2 mg/day (cyclical)
Vaginal:
Vulvular and vaginal atrophy: 2–4 g/day for 2 weeks; maintenance: 1 g, 1–3 times/week
Postmenopausal urogenital symptoms: Insert vaginal ring for 90 days
Atrophic vaginitis: 1 tablet/day for 2 weeks; maintenance: 1 tablet twice weekly
Important Notes:
Hormone therapy should continue only if benefits outweigh risks
Periodic medical review (generally every 6 months) is recommended
Adherence to prescribed dosing and regular gynecological check-ups is essential
Unopposed estrogen therapy carries a risk of endometrial hyperplasia; adding a progestogen is necessary for women with a uterus
