Urinary Antiseptic
Urinary Tract Infection Management
Uticure Tablet 1 gm is indicated for:
Prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially in patients prone to recurrent infections
Management of chronic bacteriuria in adults
Supporting urinary tract health in post-surgical patients or individuals with structural abnormalities of the urinary system
Uticure contains Methenamine Hippurate, which acts as a urinary antiseptic. After oral administration, methenamine is excreted in the urine, where it is hydrolyzed in an acidic urinary environment to release formaldehyde. This formaldehyde acts as a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, and other uropathogens.
The drug works selectively in the urinary tract without significant systemic absorption, minimizing side effects while effectively sterilizing urine. Methenamine does not promote bacterial resistance, making it suitable for long-term prophylactic use in patients with recurring UTIs.
Adults: 1 gram twice daily with food to reduce gastrointestinal irritation
Children: Safety and efficacy have not been well established in patients under 12 years of age
Administration: Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water. Adequate fluid intake is recommended to enhance urinary flow and drug efficacy
Uticure Tablet 1 gm should not be used in patients with:
Severe renal impairment
Urinary retention
Hypersensitivity to methenamine or any component of the formulation
Severe liver disease or metabolic disorders affecting urine acidity
Generally well tolerated. Some patients may experience:
Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, mild abdominal discomfort
Skin reactions: rash or urticaria (rare)
Urine discoloration: harmless, may appear slightly brown or yellow
Allergic reactions: extremely rare
Monitor patients with renal impairment or those taking urinary alkalinizing agents, as effectiveness depends on acidic urine
Use caution in patients with bladder outlet obstruction
Long-term use should be monitored under medical supervision to avoid potential formaldehyde-related irritation
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed; limited human data available
Lactation: Safety not established; caution advised
Store at room temperature (20–25°C), in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
