Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. However, some bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from degradation, thereby extending its spectrum of activity. Together, this combination provides reliable coverage against beta-lactamase–producing organisms.
