Terbinafine Hydrochloride belongs to the allylamine class of antifungal agents. It acts by selectively inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in the fungal sterol biosynthesis pathway. This inhibition results in a deficiency of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, and an accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell. The combined effect leads to disruption of cell membrane integrity and fungal cell death.
Terbinafine exhibits fungicidal activity against dermatophytes and fungistatic activity against certain yeasts and molds, making it highly effective for systemic treatment of fungal infections.
