Indications

Omastin 150 mg is indicated for the treatment and prevention of a wide range of fungal infections, including:

• Vaginal candidiasis (acute or recurrent)

• Candidal balanitis, with consideration of treating symptomatic partners

• Mucosal candidiasis such as oropharyngeal, oesophageal, non-invasive bronchopulmonary infections, candiduria, mucocutaneous candidiasis, and chronic oral atrophic candidiasis

• Dermatophytic infections including tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea versicolor, and dermal candidial infections

• Nail fungal infections

• Systemic candidiasis including candidaemia and disseminated candidiasis

• Cryptococcosis including cryptococcal meningitis and infections of pulmonary or cutaneous sites

• Maintenance therapy to prevent relapse of cryptococcal disease in patients with AIDS

• Prevention of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, especially those with neutropenia following chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or bone marrow transplantation

• Other systemic fungal infections such as histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis

Pharmacology

Omastin 150 mg contains fluconazole, a triazole antifungal that acts by inhibiting fungal cytochrome P-450 dependent enzymes. These enzymes are essential for the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of the fungal cell membrane. Inhibition of ergosterol production leads to impaired membrane integrity and ultimately fungal cell death, making fluconazole highly effective against susceptible fungal pathogens.

Dosage and Administration

Dosage depends on the type and severity of infection and should be determined by a physician. Common dosing recommendations include:

• Vaginal candidiasis: 150 mg as a single oral dose

• Oropharyngeal candidiasis: 50–100 mg once daily for 7–14 days

• Systemic candidiasis: 200–400 mg daily depending on clinical response

• Cryptococcal meningitis: 400 mg on the first day followed by 200 mg daily for at least 6–8 weeks

Drug Interactions

Omastin 150 mg may interact with several medications including warfarin, sulphonylureas, phenytoin, rifampicin, cyclosporin, theophylline, and oral contraceptives. Careful monitoring and dose adjustment may be required during concomitant use.
