Levoxin Eye Drop 0.50% contains Levofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is used in ophthalmology and otology for the treatment of bacterial infections of the eye and ear. Levofloxacin exerts its antibacterial effects by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes critical for DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This dual inhibition leads to bacterial cell death, making it effective against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens.

Antibacterial (Fluoroquinolone) Eye/Ear Drops
Bactericidal Antibiotic
Levoxin 0.5% Eye Drop is indicated for the treatment of:
Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis.
Corneal Ulcers: For bacterial keratitis in cases caused by susceptible organisms.
Postoperative Ocular Infections: Prophylaxis following ocular surgery.
Bacterial External Ear Infections (Otitis Externa): When formulated for otic use, it treats infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Note: Should only be used for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections to reduce the risk of resistance.
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is bactericidal in nature. Its mechanism involves:
Inhibition of DNA gyrase: Prevents supercoiling of bacterial DNA, a key step in replication.
Inhibition of topoisomerase IV: Prevents separation of replicated DNA into daughter cells.
This double blockade leads to rapid bacterial cell death and a decrease in infection severity.
Absorption & Distribution: When administered topically in the eye, systemic absorption is minimal. The drug penetrates ocular tissues effectively, achieving therapeutic concentrations in the cornea, conjunctiva, and aqueous humor.
Ophthalmic Use:
Instill 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2–4 hours for the first 2 days.
For the next 5 days, reduce to 1–2 drops every 4–8 hours, or as directed by the ophthalmologist.
Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
Otic Use (Ear Infections):
Instill 3–4 drops in the affected ear every 12 hours, depending on the severity and physician’s guidance.
Administration Tips:
Wash hands before use.
Avoid contact between the dropper tip and the eye, eyelids, or other surfaces.
Wait at least 5 minutes before instilling other eye drops if multiple medications are used.
Minimal systemic absorption reduces the risk of significant drug interactions.
Concomitant use with other topical ophthalmic medications should be spaced by at least 5–10 minutes.
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
Should not be used in viral, fungal, or mycobacterial eye infections.
Common:
Mild burning, stinging, or discomfort at the site of instillation
Redness or irritation of the eye
Tearing
Less Common/Serious:
Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
Severe eye pain or vision changes (rare)
Use with caution in patients with corneal epithelial defects or severe ocular surface disease.
Avoid contact lenses during treatment unless prescribed otherwise.
Resistance may develop with inappropriate or prolonged use.
Patients should not drive or operate machinery if vision is temporarily blurred after administration.
Pregnancy: Should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the risk.
Lactation: Minimal systemic absorption; use with caution.
Store at 2–25°C in a tightly closed container.
Protect from light and freezing.
Keep out of reach of children.
