Febustat 80 mg is an advanced anti-hyperuricemic agent used for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. As a non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor, Febustat targets the enzyme responsible for uric acid production, effectively reducing elevated serum uric acid levels. By controlling uric acid levels, it helps prevent gout attacks, joint damage, and other complications associated with chronic hyperuricemia.
Febustat 80 mg is specifically indicated for patients with symptomatic gout and is not recommended for the treatment of asymptomatic hyperuricemia.

Febustat 80 mg is indicated for:
Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout
Prevention of recurrent gout attacks through long-term uric acid control
Recommended Dosage:
Initial dose: 40 mg once daily
If serum uric acid remains above 6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, increase to 80 mg once daily
Can be taken with or without food
No dose adjustment is required in patients with mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment
Administration Guidelines:
Take orally at the same time each day
Adherence to therapy is essential for optimal uric acid control
Consider prophylactic therapy (e.g., NSAIDs or colchicine) during the first six months to reduce the risk of gout flares
Febustat selectively inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. This action decreases uric acid production without affecting other enzymes involved in purine and pyrimidine metabolism. By reducing uric acid levels, Febustat lowers the risk of urate crystal deposition, inflammation, and gout attacks.
Hypersensitivity to Febuxostat or any component of the formulation
Concomitant use with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline due to risk of severe toxicity
Common adverse effects may include:
Liver function abnormalities
Nausea
Arthralgia (joint pain)
Rash
Precautions:
Gout flare: May increase during initial therapy; prophylactic NSAID or colchicine may help
Cardiovascular events: Monitor for signs of myocardial infarction or stroke
Liver enzyme elevation: Regular monitoring of liver function tests is recommended
Concomitant administration with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline may increase plasma concentrations and toxicity
Monitor for drug interactions in patients on multiple medications
Pregnancy (Category C): Use only if benefits outweigh risks; unknown if excreted in human milk
Pediatric: Safety and efficacy not established in patients under 18 years
Geriatric: No specific dosage adjustments required, but monitor for sensitivity
Febustat has been studied in healthy subjects up to 300 mg daily for seven days without evidence of dose-limiting toxicity
Management of overdose is supportive and symptomatic
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture
Keep out of reach of children
Febustat 80 mg is a selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor that effectively reduces serum uric acid levels in patients with gout. It provides a targeted approach for chronic hyperuricemia management, helping to prevent recurrent gout attacks and complications. Regular monitoring of liver function and cardiovascular status ensures safe and effective therapy.
