Mechanism of Action

Deferasirox selectively binds to excess trivalent iron (Fe³⁺) in the bloodstream and forms a stable complex. This iron-chelator complex is then primarily excreted through the feces. By reducing excess iron stores, it helps prevent oxidative tissue damage and long-term complications associated with iron overload.

Indications

Deferox Tablet 500 mg is indicated for:

• Chronic iron overload due to repeated blood transfusions (transfusional hemosiderosis)
• Thalassemia major requiring regular transfusions
• Sickle cell disease with iron overload
• Myelodysplastic syndromes with transfusion-related iron accumulation
• Other chronic anemias requiring frequent transfusions

Dosage and Administration

• Taken orally once daily as prescribed by a physician
• Should be taken on an empty stomach or as directed
• Dosage is based on body weight, serum ferritin levels, and transfusion history
• Regular monitoring of serum ferritin and liver/kidney function is required
