Apixa Tablet 2.5 mg contains Apixaban, a selective oral anticoagulant used to prevent and treat blood clots. It belongs to the class of direct Factor Xa inhibitors and works by interfering with the coagulation cascade to reduce the risk of thromboembolic events. Apixa is widely prescribed for patients at risk of stroke and systemic embolism, particularly in non-valvular atrial fibrillation, as well as for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Apixa offers several advantages over traditional anticoagulants, including predictable anticoagulant effects, fixed dosing without routine monitoring, and fewer dietary restrictions, making it a convenient and effective option for long-term management.

Apixa Tablet 2.5 mg is indicated for:
Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
Treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)
Prevention of recurrent DVT and PE
Post-operative prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery
Oral Anticoagulant (Direct Factor Xa Inhibitor)
Apixaban selectively inhibits Factor Xa, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade responsible for converting prothrombin to thrombin. By inhibiting Factor Xa:
It prevents thrombin generation, reducing fibrin clot formation
It interrupts both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of the coagulation cascade
It does not require antithrombin for activity and has a rapid onset of action
Unlike vitamin K antagonists, Apixaban has predictable pharmacokinetics, allowing for fixed dosing without routine coagulation monitoring. It is absorbed orally with a bioavailability of approximately 50%, metabolized primarily via CYP3A4, and eliminated through both renal and fecal pathways.
Standard dose: 2.5 mg taken twice daily with or without food
Special considerations: Dose adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal impairment, elderly patients, or those at increased risk of bleeding
Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush or chew
Note: Adherence to prescribed dosing is critical, as missed doses may increase the risk of thromboembolic events.
Apixaban may interact with:
Strong CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir) – increases bleeding risk
Strong CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein inducers (e.g., rifampin, carbamazepine) – may reduce efficacy
Other anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents – increases risk of bleeding
NSAIDs or herbal supplements (e.g., ginkgo, garlic) – may enhance bleeding risk
Active pathological bleeding
Known hypersensitivity to Apixaban or any component of the formulation
Severe hepatic impairment associated with coagulopathy
Common side effects include:
Easy bruising
Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, gum bleeding)
Gastrointestinal discomfort
Serious side effects may include:
Major bleeding events (gastrointestinal, intracranial)
Anemia secondary to blood loss
Hypersensitivity reactions (rare)
Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment
Monitor for signs of bleeding or hemorrhage
Avoid sudden discontinuation, which may increase risk of thromboembolism
No routine coagulation monitoring is required, but periodic renal and hepatic function assessment is recommended
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly indicated; animal studies suggest potential risk
Lactation: Safety not established; breastfeeding should be discontinued during therapy
Store in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
