Third-Generation Cephalosporin Antibiotic
Ceftazidime is a bactericidal beta-lactam antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins, disrupting cell wall formation and leading to bacterial cell death. Ceftazidime is highly resistant to many beta-lactamases and demonstrates potent activity against a broad range of Gram-negative organisms, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa, along with certain Gram-positive bacteria. Following parenteral administration, it achieves therapeutic concentrations in various body tissues and fluids, including the lungs, urinary tract, skin, bones, joints, and cerebrospinal fluid when meninges are inflamed.
Maxidim Injection 1 gm/vial is indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
Lower and upper respiratory tract infections
Urinary tract infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Bone and joint infections
Intra-abdominal infections
Septicemia
Meningitis
Hospital-acquired and severe infections in immunocompromised patients
It is also suitable for empirical therapy in severe infections prior to identification of the causative organism.
The dosage and duration of therapy should be determined by the treating physician based on infection severity, patient age, body weight, and renal function.
Administered intravenously or intramuscularly after proper reconstitution
Dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment
Therapy duration depends on clinical and microbiological response
Administration should be performed by trained healthcare professionals only.
Broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage
Highly effective against Gram-negative pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Suitable for severe and hospital-acquired infections
Rapid and reliable bactericidal action
Proven clinical efficacy and safety
Some patients may experience side effects, including:
Pain or inflammation at the injection site

Skin rash or hypersensitivity reactions
Transient changes in liver enzymes or blood counts
Most adverse effects are mild and reversible. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy
Monitor renal function during prolonged therapy
