Losucon 2 mg is an oral antidiabetic medicine belonging to the sulfonylurea class. It is used in the management of Type II diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM) when adequate glycaemic control cannot be achieved with diet and exercise alone. Losucon 2 mg helps reduce elevated blood glucose levels and supports long-term metabolic control.

Losucon 2 mg is indicated in the following conditions:
As an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood glucose levels in patients with Type II diabetes mellitus whose hyperglycaemia is not adequately controlled by lifestyle modification alone.
In combination with metformin when diet, exercise, and monotherapy with either Losucon 2 mg or metformin fail to achieve satisfactory glycaemic control.
In combination with insulin in patients whose blood glucose levels are not adequately controlled by diet, exercise, and oral hypoglycaemic agents. Combined use with insulin may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia.
Sulfonylureas
Losucon 2 mg stimulates insulin release from functioning pancreatic beta cells. It also reduces hepatic glucose output and enhances insulin sensitivity at peripheral target tissues, leading to improved glucose uptake and utilization. In non-fasting diabetic patients, the blood glucose-lowering effect of a single dose can persist for up to 24 hours.
The dosage of Losucon 2 mg should be individualized based on the patient’s blood glucose levels.
Initial dose: Usually 1 mg once daily.
Dose titration: The dose may be increased gradually at intervals of 1–2 weeks based on blood glucose monitoring (1 mg → 2 mg → 3 mg → 4 mg → up to 6 mg daily).
Maintenance dose: In well-controlled patients, the usual dose range is 1–4 mg daily.
Losucon 2 mg is generally taken once daily immediately before or with the first main meal. Meals should not be skipped after taking the tablet. Dose adjustments may be required with changes in body weight, lifestyle, or improvement in glycaemic control.
Losucon 2 mg may interact with several medicines. Drugs such as insulin, other oral antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors, salicylates, sulfonamide antibiotics, fluconazole, and quinolones may enhance its hypoglycaemic effect. Corticosteroids, diuretics, thyroid hormones, and certain sympathomimetic agents may reduce its glucose-lowering action. Alcohol intake may unpredictably increase or decrease its effect.
Losucon 2 mg is contraindicated in:
Type I diabetes mellitus
Diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma
Severe hepatic or renal impairment
Dialysis patients
Hypersensitivity to sulfonylureas or sulfonamides
Common side effects include hypoglycaemia, temporary visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, skin reactions, and occasional hypotension.
