Sucralfate is a basic aluminum salt of sucrose sulfate that exerts its action in an acidic environment. Upon contact with gastric acid, it forms a viscous, adhesive substance that binds selectively to ulcerated or eroded areas of the gastrointestinal mucosa. This protective barrier shields the ulcer surface from acid, pepsin, and bile salts, allowing natural healing processes to occur. Sucralfate also stimulates the production of prostaglandins and bicarbonate, further enhancing mucosal defense. Its action is local, with minimal systemic absorption.
