Active Ingredient: Flucloxacillin Sodium
Strength: 250 mg per 5 ml suspension
Beta-lactam antibiotic
Penicillinase-resistant penicillin
Flucloxacillin exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins, blocking the formation of peptidoglycan cross-links essential for cell wall integrity. As a result, the bacterial cell wall becomes weak and susceptible to rupture, leading to bacterial death.
Unlike many penicillins, flucloxacillin is resistant to destruction by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by staphylococci. After oral administration, it is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with improved absorption when taken on an empty stomach. It distributes well into skin, soft tissues, bone, and respiratory tract tissues, making it suitable for treating a variety of infections.
Flubex DS Suspension is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by flucloxacillin-sensitive organisms, including:
Skin and soft tissue infections such as impetigo, boils, abscesses, and cellulitis
Bone and joint infections, including osteomyelitis
Respiratory tract infections
Ear, nose, and throat infections
Infected wounds and burns
Other staphylococcal infections as advised by a physician
Dosage depends on the patient’s age, body weight, and severity of infection.
The suspension should be taken on an empty stomach, ideally 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, for optimal absorption.
Shake the bottle well before each use.
Duration of treatment should be completed as prescribed to prevent resistance.
Hypersensitivity to flucloxacillin or other penicillin antibiotics
History of flucloxacillin-associated jaundice or liver dysfunction
Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment
Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
Patients with a history of allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics should be carefully monitored
Common side effects may include:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Abdominal discomfort
Skin rash or urticaria
Rare but serious reactions include allergic reactions, antibiotic-associated colitis, and cholestatic hepatitis.
