Creva 5 mg is a lipid-lowering medication belonging to the statin group, primarily used to manage high cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It works by controlling the production of cholesterol in the body and improving overall lipid profile, thereby lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart-related complications.

Creva 5 mg is indicated for:
Heterozygous Hypercholesterolemia (Familial and Non-familial)
Homozygous Hypercholesterolemia (Familial)
Mixed Dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Type IIa and IIb)
Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease
It is prescribed to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol), triglycerides, and to increase HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol).
Statins
Other Anti-anginal & Anti-ischaemic drugs
Creva 5 mg contains rosuvastatin, a selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) to mevalonate, a key precursor in cholesterol synthesis.
It works in two main ways:
Increases hepatic LDL receptors: This enhances uptake and breakdown of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Reduces hepatic synthesis of VLDL: This decreases the total number of VLDL and LDL particles circulating in the blood.
Through these mechanisms, Creva effectively lowers cholesterol levels and reduces cardiovascular risk.
Usual dose range: 5–40 mg once daily
The 40 mg dose should only be used in patients who do not achieve LDL-C goals with 20 mg.
Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH): Starting dose 20 mg once daily.
Pediatric patients with HeFH:
8 to <10 years: 5–10 mg/day
10 to 17 years: 5–20 mg/day
Pediatric patients with HoFH (7–17 years): 20 mg/day
Dosage should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response.
Creva 5 mg can be taken with or without food, at any time of the day. It is recommended to take it at the same time daily for better adherence.
Notable drug interactions include:
Cyclosporine: Increases rosuvastatin exposure. Do not exceed 5 mg daily.
Gemfibrosil: Avoid combination if possible. If necessary, limit dose to 10 mg daily.
Lopinavir/Ritonavir or Atazanavir/Ritonavir: Limit dose to 10 mg daily.
Coumarin anticoagulants: May prolong INR; monitor closely.
Fibrates and Niacin: Increased risk of muscle-related side effects.
Patients should inform their physician about all medications they are taking.
Creva 5 mg is contraindicated in:
Known hypersensitivity to any component
Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes
Pregnant women and women planning pregnancy
Nursing mothers
Creva 5 mg is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include:
Headache
Muscle pain (myalgia)
Constipation
Weakness (asthenia)
Abdominal pain
Nausea
Rare but serious side effects include myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.
Safety during pregnancy has not been established, and it is contraindicated. It is unknown whether the drug is excreted in human milk; therefore, it should not be used during breastfeeding.
Skeletal muscle effects: Risk increases with higher doses (especially 40 mg), age above 65 years, hypothyroidism, renal impairment, and certain drug combinations.
Patients should report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness immediately.
Liver monitoring: Liver enzymes should be checked before starting treatment and periodically during therapy.
