Pharmacology and Mechanism of Action

Bilastine is a highly selective antagonist of peripheral histamine H₁ receptors. In allergic reactions, histamine release plays a key role in causing symptoms such as sneezing, itching, rhinorrhea, erythema, and wheal formation. By blocking H₁ receptors, bilastine effectively prevents histamine from binding to its target sites, thereby reducing allergic symptoms.

As a second-generation antihistamine, bilastine has minimal ability to cross the blood–brain barrier. This significantly lowers the risk of sedation and central nervous system-related adverse effects commonly seen with first-generation antihistamines. Bilastine has a rapid onset of action and provides symptom control for up to 24 hours, allowing convenient once-daily dosing.

Indications
